Brandao, 83, told Valor that "it wouldn't be honest to say we will leapfrog (Itau Unibanco)," adding that such goal was not Bradesco's main priority in the short term. Yet, he said Brazil's fast population growth, the expanding role of banking and an increase in formal jobs might give Bradesco an edge to capture new account holders. But it faces political uncertainty. As bosses of oil majors go, José Sergio Gabrielli stands out as unusual. The chief executive of Petrobras, Brazil’s part-public, part-private oil and gas giant, Mr Gabrielli took up left-wing politics at the age of 15. After spending six months in prison under a military dictatorship, he switched to the less contentious field of macroeconomics, obtaining a doctorate from Boston University and a post as a professor at a Brazilian university (from which he is on leave). Returning to left-wing politics in the 1980s, he sought office for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s Workers’ Party. But since 2005 he has run the most ambitious oil company in the world. Petrobras is the main developer of the biggest new oilfield discovered this century, deep beneath the Atlantic Ocean. After requiring 30.2 million cubic meters of gas at the beginning of the month, Brazilian demand oscillated between 24-26 million cubic meters in subsequent days falling as low as 21 million cubic meters last weekend, said industry sources.
